The Discussion of the Thesis of the Student Abbas Idan Obaid

On Wednesday morning, 27/10/2021, in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Arts, a doctoral thesis, entitled “Signaling Strategies in the Correlation of Gesture with Speech in the Iraqi Arab Political Speech: A Study of Critical Discourse Analysis”, was discussed.

The thesis submitted by the student Abbas Idan Obeid included the study of the cognitive and social aspects of the gesture and the extent to which it is related to the linguistic text, during the critical analysis of three videos of political speech.

The thesis aims to identify evasive cases in the treatment of linguistic structure and gesture in the Iraqi Arab political discourse.

The thesis concluded that there are a number of signal strategies resulting from the connection of gesture with speech in addition to some of the graphical functions resulting from that connection, as well as the urgent need for further studies that examine the nature of communication by gesture in wide fields of community interaction.
