Brief history
The Department of History was founded in the academic year 1964-1965 at the same time of founding College of Arts, which was the first college established on 1/4/1964 to be the starting point for the establishment of the University of Basrah, in recognition of the great position of history among human sciences. The department is specialized in studying all branches of history (Ancient, Islamic, Middle Ages, modern and contemporary history).

Creating an academic body specialized in supporting educational institutions towards excellence, quality and competition locally, regionally and globally.
Message
Establishing a governmental body to provide scientific, administrative and technical support in the field of quality for educational institutions within the specializations of human sciences to become more capable of creativity and innovation through efficient numbers commensurate with the needs of the labor market and using scientific and consulting research to serve the community and its various institutions according to international standards.
Goals
1- Supporting academic institutions to upgrade educational service and update programs and curricula to keep up with regional and global developments.
2- Supporting scientific research movements by establishing a national faculty for postgraduate studies to serve the community and find solutions to the outstanding problems.
3- The participation of academic institutions in shaping the future through history and supporting them to develop effective and achievable future strategies and plans.
4- Enhancing the role of consulting services in the academic institutions and making them a center for cultural and scientific support for the community.
5- Continuous improvement of faculty members focusing on the necessity of mastering the English language and computers usage and activating international standards for faculty/students ratio.
6- Overcome the difficulties faced by the academic institutions to enter international classifications and obtain accreditation from various accreditation departments.
7- Supporting and directing scientific laboratories to obtain ISO / 17025.
8- Directing academic institutions to follow health methods.
9- Strengthening the management of academic institutions to achieve an academic reputation and raise their competitive spirit in all fields.
10- Supporting academic institutions with international professors by organizing their competition in all fields.
11- Encouraging academic institutions to conclude international and cooperative agreements between international institutions.
12- Show the honorable scientific image of the Iraqi researcher by supporting him in publishing in international journals and participating in international conferences.
13- Enhancing the mutual relations between various academic institutions in order to create a suitable environment.
14- Directing academic institutions in preserving the authenticity of Iraqi society by strengthening the spirit of citizenship.
