Brief history
The Department of Translation was founded and began its academic career at the beginning of the academic year 2002-2003 as a place accommodated to the translation students in the southern region of Iraq. It and its counterparts of the translation departments at Al-Mustansiriya University and the University of Mosul contribute to the preparation and training of university students and prepare them to be effective translators in the various types of translation and its various activities.
The Vision
The Translation Department was established to play a pioneering role in the field of higher education and community service inside Iraq. It was created for being distinguished locally, regionally and internationally by the quality of its curricula and refining the talents of its students and graduates. The Department of Translation, College of Arts, University of Basra seeks to achieve linguistic, cultural and artistic concepts by providing the student with knowledge and practical experiences in translation from the Arabic and English languages from a cross-cultural perspective .
The Message
The message of the department is to prepare cadres who can work in the translation departments in Iraqi universities and other universities. It also aims to get the cadres who have the possibility of working in the departments and state productive and service institutions, through translation from Arabic into English and vice versa in various fields of work such as contracts, transactions and official books in addition to teaching English language and translation in various courses for employees of state departments to serve the public interest and society.
The Objectives
The department aims to prepare technical cadres in translation and fill the growing need for translators in various fields of work in official departments and institutions, press, radio and television. It also aims at preparing an elite that can become cadres in translation departments in Iraqi universities and preparing qualified translators to translate international thought and culture into Arabic and vice versa to build bridges and openness to the countries of the world. In addition, it seeks to sponsor and encourage talented students who can specialize in the various branches of translation at the higher studies level in order to meet the urgent need of the country in its steady growth and laying the foundations of cultural and civilizational exchange with the countries of the whole world.
