Discussion of the Thesis of the Student Ihsan Hashem Abdul Wahid

On Sunday morning, November 14, 2021, a doctoral thesis, entitled “Conceptual Metaphor in Spoken Iraqi Arabic”, was discussed in the Department of English

 Language at the College of Arts.

The thesis submitted by the student, Ihsan Hashem Abdul Wahid, included identifying how metaphor is used in our daily lives and the extent to which it affects the way of communication between the speaker and the listener.

The thesis aims to show how to identify the structure of metaphor and how to apply the cognitive language destinations to the Iraqi Arabic dialect.

The thesis concluded that the Iraqi Arabic dialect includes many of the three types of conceptual metaphors, which have many diverse uses, and the use of each metaphor depends on the position of the speech, the temporal and spatial influence, and the culture of the speaker and listener.

The thesis recommended that we emphasize the position of the speech and its impact on the understanding of metaphor, and metaphor can play a major role in determining the direction of the text, as well as it can be a successful alternative to Grace's principles.
