Basrah University Organizes a Symposium on Iranian Presidential Elections

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Majid Abdul Hameed Al Kaabi, and the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Dr. Haider Abdul Ridha Al-Tamimi, the Department of History at the College of Arts / University of Basrah organized on Tuesday 7/12/2021 a symposium entitled “Iranian presidential elections for 2021, a reading of the reasons for the rise of the fundamentalist candidate, Ibrahim Raisi.

The symposium, which was presented by the instructor, Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Sattar Kateh, aims to present an objective vision on the elections of 2021, in which several fundamentalist and reformist candidates competed, and was won by Ibrahim Raisi, who held many positions, the most important of which was the head of the judiciary. Many questions were asked and answered within the limits of what was mentioned in the presented paper.

The symposium included several topics, the most important of which was a simplified historical vision on the political system, its local and regional influence, the stages of selecting the presidential candidate following the constitutional frameworks, and finally, a reading of the election results.

In the symposium, the researchers called for a set of recommendations, the most important of which were:

 1- Activating the topics they mentioned in making local and international decisions.

 2- Following up on internal developments in the neighboring countries to Iraq to determine the nature of what is happening and provide visions for how to interact with those developments.

3- Urging students to follow up and monitor events and try to write about them in an academic way that gives a positive indication for students of the history department.
