Discussion of the Student Huda Yasser Muhammad’s Thesis

On Sunday morning, 12/12/2021, a master thesis entitled (Identity in the novels of Duna Ghali) was discussed in the Department of Arabic at the College of Arts / University of Basrah.

The thesis submitted by the student Huda Yasser Muhammad included three chapters. The first chapter discussed personal identity, the second chapter included the collective identity, and the third chapter discussed feminist identity.

The thesis aims to study the concept of identity through the narrative output of the writer (Duna Ghali) and address it through the sociocultural approach, which can communicate with critical approaches that examine the implicit patterns of narrative texts.

The thesis concluded that the identity is not based on fixed foundations of pure essence, but rather as a changing entity according to circumstances and goals, as the narrative texts are replete with multiple identities, including the personal identity from which the fixed identity and the changing identity emerge.  This confirms that identities are subject to change and development according to the dialectic of time and place, and the transformations of society. The identity is in a process of permanent construction and continuous renewal.
