Basrah University Organizes a Panel Discussion Entitled Potential Environmental Impact of Turkey's Dams on Iraq

On Tuesday 14/12/2021, the Department of Geography and Information Systems at the College of Arts / University of Basrah organized a panel discussion entitled (the Potential Environmental Impact of Turkey's Dams on Iraq).

The panel discussion, which was presented by Prof. Dr. Shukri Ibrahim Al-Hassan, aimed at diagnosing the most prominent manifestations of environmental deterioration resulting from the Turkish dams built on the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates and their role in influencing the water situation in Iraq, which resulted in repercussions on the Iraqi environment.

 

The panel discussion included a review of the following effects:

 1- Impact on the hydrological system of Iraq.

 2- Impact on the quality and quantity of water.

 3- Impact on soil and land degradation.

 4- Impact on aquatic animal waters.

 5- Impact on population displacement.

 

The panel discussion concluded that it is necessary to adopt an accurate environmental risk policy, produce an effective negotiation strategy with downstream countries, and follow a serious policy in water management in Iraq to avoid environmental consequences in the future.
