Basrah University Organizes a Symposium Entitled Iraq Police: One Hundred Years of Giving and Sacrificing

On Tuesday, 11/1/2022, the History Department at the College of Arts/ University of Basrah organized a symposium entitled Iraq Police on the occasion of its first centenary.

The symposium aimed to review the historical development of the police since the era of Islam, all the way to contemporary history, as well as a statement of the security and social tasks undertaken by the police in Iraq after 2003.

The symposium, which was moderated by Prof. Dr. Nazem Rashem Maatouq, and presented by some professors from the History Department and from the Basrah Police Command, including Prof. Dr. Salma Abdul Hameed Al-Hashemi, Prof. Dr. Alaa Kamel Saleh, Assistant Prof. Dr. Najat Abdul-Karim Abdul-Sada, and Brigadier General Basem Ghanem Hanoon, Director of Basrah Police Command Media.

The symposium dealt with the establishment of the Iraqi police in 1922 and its development in the subsequent years. The research papers presented during this symposium traced the development of the police since the era of the start of Islam and subsequent Islamic eras to contemporary history, as well as a statement of the security and social tasks undertaken by the police.

The symposium recommended the need to emphasize cooperation between the university, society and state institutions, especially the police command, to address the dangers that Iraqi society suffers from, including drug crimes and cybercrime, and to establish joint cultural, awareness and scientific activities between the University of Basrah and the Basrah Police.
