Discussion of the Student Zahraa Abdel Kazim Muhammad’s Thesis

On Tuesday morning, 11/1/2022, at the Department of Arabic at the College of Arts / University of Basrah, a PhD thesis entitled “Centrality of News in Arabic Authorship” was discussed.

The thesis presented by the student Zahraa Abdel Kazim Muhammad discussed the presence of the news in the various works of the fourth century as a permanent literary genre with its own structure as the essence forming it. The news represented knowledge vessels for the authors and constituted a record of the exploits of the Arabs. It was transmitted from one generation to the next, orally, until the emergence of the writing movement and the announcement of a new era in dealing with narration, so it announced its crossing from the stage of writing to enter the era of authorship that was the focus of the researcher’s work.

The research relied on the historical study of the ancient Arab narration, reinforced by the analysis of news units to determine their structural characteristics and connotations.

The thesis was divided into three chapters preceded by a preface and an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The preface follows the definitions of the news, its role in Arab culture, as well as its role in producing the literary genre, then the nature of news formation and its role in authorship. The first chapter is entitled building the news, the second chapter is entitled news topics, and the third chapter is entitled the news system.
