Discussion of the Student Nada Abdul Hameed Yassin’s Thesis

On Thursday morning, 13/1/2022, in the Department of Information and Knowledge Technologies at the College of Arts / University of Basrah, the research of the higher diploma entitled (The Skills of Human Resources of the Central Public Library in Basrah) was discussed.

The research presented by the student Nada Abdul Hameed Yassin included four chapters. The first chapter discussed the general framework of the research, the second chapter included the theoretical aspect, the third chapter dealt with the practical aspect, and the fourth chapter dealt with the results and recommendations.

The research aims to identify the reality of the central public library in Basrah in terms of procedures and services and to indicate the characteristics of the human resources in it, as well as to identify the availability of skills (personal, leadership, objective, and technical objectivity of the human resources working in the library).

The research concluded:

1. The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System for the purpose of classifying its contents by adopting one of the Arabic translations of this system, as well as using the Anglo-American rules of indexing in descriptive indexing, but it does not use any list of Arab or foreign subject headings, so it does not contain any subject index, and the available card index is arranged alphabetically according to the author.

2. The highest percentage of human resources did not participate in any training course to develop their skills, and the highest percentage of those who participated in training courses was limited to one training course only.

3. The human resources working in the central public library possess personal and leadership skills and the skill of helping and guiding the beneficiaries at a very good level.

4. The human resources' possession of objective skills was not at the required level, while the level of their technical objective skills was weak, and this is an unacceptable indicator.

The search recommended:

1. Working to increase the financial allocation of the Central Public Library, allocating a sufficient budget to meet the requirements of office work and providing new and diverse services.

2. The necessity of involving all human resources in the library within intensive training courses, especially in the field of information and libraries, taking into account the development of their objective and technical skills in accordance with the developments in the field of library work.
