Discussion of the Student Raneen Nazim Yousef Al-Asadi’s Thesis

On Thursday morning, 27/1/2022, at the Department of Arabic at the College of Arts / University of Basrah, a PhD thesis entitled “The Ego and the Other in the Argumentations of Pre-Islamic Literature” was discussed.

The thesis submitted by the student, Raneen Nazim Yousef Al-Asadi, included a reference to the most important historical sources, such as the book Al-Manmaq Akhbar Quraish by Muhammad bin Habib Al-Baghdadi, Al-Dibaj by Abu Ubaidah Muammar bin Al-Muthanna, and Al-Aghani by Abu Al-Faraj Al-Asfahani.

The thesis aims to identify these argumentations, whether in poetry or prose, and to make sure to analyze these literary texts and everything related to them for the purpose of convincing the recipient of the speaker's idea.

The thesis concluded that the argumentations in their entirety are verbal confrontations between two or more people to reach a conclusion. There are usually other participants in the argumentation, among them (the audience), which is represented by the tribe, (poets supporting and opposing), and (the ruling), which is essential in the argumentation. It shed light on the argumentative methods, as the quiet dialogue and the loud dialogue at other times was the ideal artistic bridge for communication with the other.
