Discussion of the Student Haider Abdel-Hur Anbar Al-Mayahi’s Thesis

On Thursday morning, 17/2/2022, a master thesis, entitled (A Geographical Analysis of the Construction Industries in Basrah Governorate for the Period 2003-2020), was discussed at the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems.

The thesis presented by the student Haider Abdel-Hur Anbar Al-Mayahi included four chapters. The first chapter discussed the characteristics of construction industries and their historical development in Iraq and Basra Governorate, the second chapter included factors of the settlement of construction industries in Basra Governorate, the third chapter discussed the geographical distribution of construction industries in Basra Governorate, and the fourth chapter dealt with the problems facing  Construction industries in Basra Governorate and their solutions.

The thesis aims to identify the reality of the construction industries, their facilities and branches, their economic importance, the most important factors of industrial settlement affecting the construction industries in the governorate, and to show the industrial operations of the branches of the construction industry and the variance of the geographical distribution of these industries among the administrative units of the governorate and the most important problems facing the construction industries in the governorate. The thesis concluded with the diversity of industries’ products  in the governorate, as the number of facilities for construction industries in the governorate reached (1129) with (10461) workers.

Al-Zubair district occupied the first place in the number of facilities with a percentage of (27.7%) of the total construction industries, and Al-Faw district came in the tenth and last place with a percentage of (1.5%) of the number of facilities in the governorate. The industrial diversity index reached (0.74) and the administrative units varied in the degree of diversity as it ranged (0.15-0.77) and the degree of industrial pairing, which ranged between (0.5-2.0) in the governorate.

The thesis recommended increasing the number of investment licenses for the various branches of construction industries in the governorate, in order to distribute them in administrative units, especially in the field of manufacturing clay bricks, thermostone and thermolite, providing banking facilities, granting loans to owners of construction industries facilities, reducing interest on industrial loans by the Industrial Bank and other banks, and providing large areas of land, distributing them to the owners of facilities, and improving transportation methods in the governorate.
