Discussion of the Student Hamid Manati Dafer’s Thesis

On Sunday morning, 27/2/2022, a master thesis, entitled (Rhetorical Strategies in the Discourses of Four Arab Leaders: A Critical Discourse Study), was discussed at the Department of English at the College of Arts / University of Basrah.

The thesis presented by the student Hamid Manati Dafer included five chapters. The first chapter discussed the introductions to the research, the second chapter included the theoretical framework for the research, the third chapter dealt with the research methodology, the fourth chapter dealt with the analysis and discussion of data, and the fifth chapter discussed results, recommendations and suggestions.

The thesis aims to explore the discursive strategies in the speeches of four Arab leaders in the context of the collapse of power and how ideology, power and leadership were entrenched in their chosen discourses.

The study concluded that these four speakers from different backgrounds and ideologies, and who delivered these speeches in a similar context, tried to manipulate the language to influence their audience with the aim of changing the attitudes and behaviors of that audience by conveying certain messages and to achieve their goals, each according to the circumstances and contexts in which he delivered his speech.
