Basrah University Organizes a Field Visit to the Ancient City of Ur and the Marshes of Dhi Qar Governorate

On Thursday, 3/3/2022, the History Department at the College of Arts / University of Basrah organized a field visit to the ziggurat in the ancient city of Ur and the Chabayish marshes in Dhi Qar governorate.

The visit aimed to see the antiquities in the city of Ur, most notably the ziggurat and some of the temples in the city, as well as the environment of the Dhi Qar marshes in the Chabayish district.

The field visit, which was carried out by a group of professors from the Department of History, included touring the ancient city of Ur and getting acquainted with its prominent landmarks, most notably the ziggurat and the house of the Prophet Ibrahim Al-Khalil (the father of the prophets), as well as viewing the temple (Dib Lal Mach), which is located on the ziggurat wall in the eastern corner.  The professors also visited the marshes of the Chabayish district in Dhi Qar, which was included in the World Heritage List, and the environment of the marshes was reviewed, as well as a visit to the monument and museum of the Martyrs of the Marshes.

 

The professors recommended the following:

 1. The necessity of taking care of antiquities in southern Iraq and providing services for them in order to open them to tourists from inside and outside Iraq.

2. Recommending the organization of trips for students of undergraduate and postgraduate studies to see the monuments and what the ancestors built in the previous eras.

3. The necessity of taking care of the marshes, providing services and security in them, and developing them in order to turn them into an important tourist facility that attracts tourists from inside and outside the country.
