Discussion of the Student Souad Abdullah Sewan’s Thesis

On Thursday morning, 24/3/2022, a master’s thesis, entitled (the concentrations of nutrient salts in the Shatt Al-Arab River between Abi Al-Khasib and Al-Faw), was discussed at the Department of Geography and Geographical Information Systems at the College of Arts / University of Basrah.

The thesis presented by the student Souad Abdullah Sewan included three chapters. The first chapter discussed the theoretical framework, the second chapter included the geographical factors affecting the concentrations of nutrients in the water of the studied stations, and the third chapter dealt with the physical, chemical and organic variables of the water of the study stations.

The thesis aims to:

1- Determine the amount of dissolved salts and nutrients in the studied places of Shatt al-Arab stream.

2- Determine the geographical factors that contributed to the variation in the amount of nutrients and dissolved salts.

3- Shed light on the levels of organic pollution depending on the nutrients in Shatt Al-Arab stream.

The thesis concluded that some of the factors that played an effective role in exacerbating the phenomenon of pollution, especially the nutrients and organic pollution in the waters of Shatt al-Arab in the longitudinal section studied between Abi Al-Khasib and Al-Faw districts, and their impact on human and his various activities. The climatic factor is considered one of the main factors in forming this phenomenon.

The thesis also concluded the importance of:

1- Treating organic waste before disposing of it, as it is the cause of depletion of dissolved oxygen in water.

2- Activating the role of the committees to monitor the water quality of Shatt al-Arab and activating the role of the environmental departments in Basra on the waste disposal mechanism.

3- Monitoring the quality of water drained from neighboring countries, as in the Swaib and Karun Rivers, as they contribute to increasing the pollution of Shatt Al-Arab water.
