To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the founding of Basrah University, under the supervision of the head of the history department, Prof. Dr. Raghad Faisal Abdul-Wahhab, and in coordination with the working team of the department’s instructors, the Department of History held the annual cultural competition, as part of the activities of the department’s cultural festival to celebrate the university’s day, on Monday, 28/3/2022, the ceremony was attended by professors and students of the department.
The ceremony began with playing the Republican anthem, and reciting Surat Al-Fatihah for the souls of the martyrs of Iraq, then Prof. Dr. Farouk Saleh Al-Omar gave a speech in which he spoke about the importance of the university and its effective role in building society and developing it, and explained the importance of the role of graduates in bearing responsibility in the development and progress of the country.
Then Prof. Hameed Ahmad Hamdan Al-Tamimi gave a speech on the history of Basrah University, which was founded on the first of April 1964. The study began in five colleges (science, engineering, economics, law, and arts) in the first academic year 1964-1965, and it accepted 816 male and female students, and then touched upon the establishment of the Department of History, which coincided with the opening of the College of Arts in 1964-1965.
Then, in his speech, he reviewed the names of the heads of the department who headed the department since its establishment, with accurate scientific information about them, and then selected poems were recited at the ceremony.
Then the program of the cultural competition between the students of the department began between the third stage students' team and the fourth stage students' team. The competition questions dealt with various cultural and scientific aspects, and various general information. The fourth stage team won the competition with a score of (8) points against (4) points for the third stage team.
At the end of the competition, letters of thanks and appreciation were given to the professors who contributed to the cultural activity, as well as honoring the participating students, and the outstanding students, by presenting gifts and letters of thanks to them.
