Discussion of the Student Ammar Abdul-Jabbar Dayesh’s Thesis

On Thursday morning, 7/4/2022, a PhD thesis entitled (Spatial Analysis of Secondary Education Services in the Main Cities of Basra Governorate) was discussed at the Department of Geography and Geographical Information Systems at the College of Arts / University of Basrah.

The thesis presented by the student Ammar Abdul-Jabbar Dayesh included four chapters. The first chapter included a historical overview of public and private secondary education services, the second chapter was for some characteristics in the main cities, the third chapter was about the spatial distribution of public and private secondary education services, and the fourth chapter dealt with the spatial efficiency of public and private secondary education services in the main cities of Basra Governorate, as well as the introduction, conclusions, proposals and thesis abstract in Arabic and English.

The thesis aims to reveal the reality of public and private secondary education services in the main cities of Basra Governorate and to determine the level of functional efficiency of public and private secondary education services according to the planning standards approved in Iraqi cities, and to predict the future of the actual and future need for secondary education services and the space they require in light of the increasing population growth in the main cities of Basra Governorate according to the approved local standards.

The thesis concluded that public and private secondary education services are not distributed fairly and equally in the main cities of Basra Governorate, as they are concentrated in cities without others and are not distributed in proportion to the population size in them. There is a lack of balance between the size of the population and the size of educational services, as it is not sufficient to meet the needs of the residents of the main cities where the spatial efficiency of secondary education services is lower than the required level.

The thesis recommended the redistribution and development of secondary education services in the main cities of Basra Governorate on a regular basis and in proportion to the population size, and to improve the level of their efficiency by redistributing them in line with the approved educational planning standards and the approved population and cadastral standards. As well as activating the role of government institutions and coordinating the work of education directorates and municipalities in the main cities and activating the role of government support for the private sector in order to develop secondary education services in the main cities of Basra Governorate paying attention to all public and private secondary education services in the main cities of Basra Governorate through continuous maintenance in order to sustain them and the changes that occur over time and in accordance with  the population's need for it.
