Discussion of the Student Saif Moataz Omar

On Tuesday morning, 28 June 2022, in the department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah, a PhD thesis entitled (The United States of America and the state of South Africa: a study in political and military relations 1977-2001).

The thesis presented by the student Saif Moataz Omar included a preface, an introduction and four chapters. The preface deals with (a historical overview of the relations of the United States of America with South Africa between (1776-1977), the first chapter included (relations between the United States of America and the state of South Africa during the reign of President Jimmy Earl Carter (1977-1981), the second chapter reviewed the policy of the administration of US President Ronald Reagan towards the state of South Africa (1981-1989), the third chapter is devoted to the study of relations between the United States of America and the State of South Africa during the administration of President George W. Bush (1989-1993), and the fourth and final chapter examined the development of American relations with the state of South Africa during the reign of US President Bill Clinton in (1993).

The thesis aims to show that the country of South Africa enjoys a prestigious position at all levels ,at the international level, this country has an important strategic location, it is located in the southernmost part of the African continent, overlooking the Indian and Atlantic oceans, and then it controls the "The cape of good hope ‘’, which shares with the Suez Canal an important and unique feature, which is to connect the East with the West and pass through the south of IT giant oil tankers going to the industrialized countries in Europe and the Americas. In addition, the state of South Africa is of great economic importance, as it includes in its interior huge mineral riches and reserves, especially strategic riches such as precious metals, uranium, and other important elements.
