Discussion of the Student Mortada Muhammad Salih’s Thesis

On Wednesday morning 10/8/2022, a master's thesis titled (Geographical analysis of the qualitative and age composition of the population of Maysan Governorate) was discussed at the Department of Geography and Geographical Information Systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.

The thesis presented by the student Mortada Muhammad Salih included four chapters. The first chapter discussed some of the demographic characteristics of Maysan Governorate, the second chapter included the qualitative structure of the population of Maysan Governorate for the period (1997-2020), the third chapter dealt with the age structure of the population of Maysan Governorate for the period (1997 – 2020), and the fourth chapter focused on the factors affecting gender and age composition.

The study aims to analyze the spatial and temporal variance of the qualitative and age structure in Maysan Governorate and to explain and analyze those spatial variances of the size, distribution and growth of the governorate's population, and what are the factors affecting the above two structures.

The study concluded the following:

1- The study showed population growth and the volumetric and quantitative development of the governorate’s population during the extended study period (1997-2020).

2- Variation of the numerical, relative and dense population distribution among the administrative units of Maysan Governorate during the study period.

3 - The study showed that there is no perfect distribution of the population in the governorate, as administrative units with high and low population densities appeared.
