Discussion of the Student Haider Nasser Shaddad

On Monday morning, 31/10/2022, in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah a PhD thesis entitled (Electric power transmission system in Basrah Governorate (a study in transportation geography) was discussed.

The thesis presented by the student Haider Nasser Shaddad included four chapters. The first chapter discussed (the concept of electric power transmission and the components of the transmission system in Basrah Governorate ,the second chapter included the geographical factors affecting the electric power transmission system in Basrah Governorate ,the third chapter dealt with the geographical distribution of electric power transmission in Basrah Governorate, and the fourth chapter discussed the problems of electric power transmission in Basrah Governorate and ways to limit them.

The thesis aims to study the electric power transmission system in Basra Governorate, introduce its various components, demonstrate the impact of geographical factors (natural and human) on its geographical distribution, identify the most important problems resulting from that impact, and find appropriate solutions to all those problems.

The study recommended :

1- Redistributing the substations in a way that ensures the presence of at least one electrical substation for each district by creating new substations, especially in the districts of Al-Deir, Al-Hartha, and Shatt Al-Arab.

2- The trend towards investing in renewable energies because it represents the ideal solution to all electrical problems in Basrah Governorate, due to the availability of the necessary capabilities for its investment and the presence of specialized centers such as the Energy and Environment Center affiliated with the Iraqi Ministry of Industry, which manufactures renewable energy devices such as solar heaters and solar panels.
