Discussion of the Student Tahani Al-Aibi Kateh

On Thursday morning 10/11/2022 in the Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah a PhD thesis entitled (US-Chinese relations 1974-1980, a study in political relations) was discussed.

The thesis presented by the student, Tahani Al-Aibi Kateh, included a preface and three chapters. The preface discussed US-Chinese relations until 1974. The first chapter discussed US-Chinese relations 1974-1975 ,the second chapter dealt with the development of US-Chinese relations during the years 1976-1977, and the third chapter included the normalization of relations between the two countries and its impact on the development of US-Chinese relations 1978-1980.

The thesis aims to identify the course of US-Chinese relations after World War II (1939-1945), especially since the United States of America sought after World War II (1939-1945) to strengthen its military and political influence in the region of East and Southeast Asia, to find a place in that region, which is important to it from the strategic and economic point of view, on the one hand, and an attempt to prevent the Soviet Union from extending its influence and imposing its hegemony on some countries of the region on the other side.

The thesis concluded:

1- The US-Chinese relations were characterized by a large degree of hostility, especially since China is a country with communist tendencies, while the United States of America is a capitalist country, and it rejected the communist tide. Over the course of twenty-two years (1949-1971), the United States of America tried to disrupt and destabilize and weaken the communist government in China, believing that China as a country was an aggressive, expansionist power that threatened the security of its non-communist neighbors.

2- The relationship between the United States and China started badly, as the latter rejected the United States of America as the main global agent of capitalism, which made Washington refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the new Chinese government and continue to support the Republic of China on the island of Taiwan - as the only legitimate representative of the Chinese people.
