An Instructor from the Department of Translation Participates in an International Discussion of a Master Thesis

Within the framework of documenting scientific cooperation between the University of Basrah and academic institutions outside Iraq, an instructor in the Department of translation, Prof.Dr. Jassim Khalifa Sultan, participated in the discussion of the master thesis of the student Shatha Awad Qandil from the College of Arts / Islamic University in Gaza / Palestine ,through Zoom platform. 

The thesis was entitled Semantic Implications of Translating Cultural Expressions in Prison Literature: The Prisoners’ Diaries as A Case Study.

 

 

This thesis shed light on the translation of the book "The Prisoners' Notes", which is designed in the form of stories told according to the style of writing the diaries.It is an example of Palestinian prison literature, which focuses on the experiences of prisoners and the suffering and difficult life conditions that it included, where journalist Yasser Al-Banna compiled this book after interviewing the released prisoners in the Gilad Shalit deal in 2011. The study adopted the descriptive analytical approach to evaluate the translation of some political, social and religious expressions used in the prisoners' stories.  The results showed the lack of translations in transferring these expressions into the English language.
