In the Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah a PhD thesis entitled (religious support - the dialectic of religion and politics in the Islamic state until the year 656 AH / 1258 AD) was discussed .

The thesis presented by student Muhammad Aboud Mahdi included an introduction and four chapters. The introduction discussed the scope of the research and the presentation of the sources. The first chapter dealt with the defining structures of the concepts (support, religion and politics),the second chapter dealt with religious support in the Rashidun era ,  the third chapter included religious support in the Umayyad era, and the fourth chapter focused on the dynamics of religion and politics in the Abbasid era.

The thesis aimed at dismantling the interrelationship between the religious and the political in the stage of authoritarian monopoly, where the stage of political focus on the religious began to displace the sacred political religious, adopting the method of reading and dismantling the text while taking the semantic witness of the study sample in the horizontal and not the vertical path to cover the historical periods that were studied in the study period.  Because it represents a constructive and evolutionary stage in the adoption of methods and mechanisms of support.

The thesis concluded:

That the faction of authoritarian usurpation that worked to displace the legal right holders to the direction in the manner of imitation of the religious-political path, and because of its lack of religious base, resorted to strengthening its political path with the religious side, and the process of religious support included most of the Islamic eras, and this is like the intellectual structure of the subject of the study.
