On Sunday morning, 22/1/2023, in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah a master thesis entitled (Indicators of environmental pollution in Iraq for the period (2010-2020) was discussed.

The thesis presented by the student, Ghofran Abdel-Saheb Abdel-Sayed, included four chapters.The first chapter discussed the theoretical, scientific and conceptual foundations , the second chapter included the environmental and statistical analysis of air pollution indicators in Iraq ,the third chapter discussed the environmental and statistical analysis of water pollution indicators in Iraq , and the fourth chapter dealt with the environmental and statistical analysis of soil pollution indicators in Iraq.

This study aims to:

Determine the most important indicators of environmental pollution (air - water - soil) in Iraq for the period (2010-2020) according to the environmental statistics bulletins issued by the Central Statistical Organization, with a comparison of environmental pollution levels during the study period using statistical methods to reach inferential results about the problem of environmental pollution and to verify the stability of these data, as well as to predict the state of environmental pollution for the next five years, using special statistical methods. 

The thesis concluded:

 1- The presence of an upward trend at times and a relatively stable trend at other times.  It tends to infer the existence of environmental risks in Iraq if the trend of pollution continues at its current rates.

 2- Forecasting is affected by the available statistics and their numerical value, and it was noted that most of the predictions in this study are related to the nature of the data independent of them, and therefore the forecast trends may not necessarily reflect the path that pollution rates will be in the future, as the expectations increase or decrease depending on the nature of the circumstances, factors and main causes of pollution.
