Discussion of Student Intisar Mohi Odeh

On Wednesday morning, 2/15/2023, a master  thesis entitled (Evidences from the Books of Opposites until the end of the third century AH, a semantic study) was discussed in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.

 

The thesis presented by the student, Intisar Mohi Odeh included three chapters. The first chapter discussed the phonetic and morphological signs, the second chapter included the grammatical signs, and the third chapter discussed the contextual signs.

 

The thesis aims to demonstrate the importance of the semantic study to clarify the intended meaning of the expressions of opposites contained in the Qur’anic and poetic evidences in the books of opposites until the end of the third century AH, which are: The Book of Opposites by Muhammad ibn al-Mustanir Qatrib (d.  T 216 AH), investigation and publication by Dr.  August Hefner, The Book of Opposites by Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Tawzi (d. 233 AH), investigation by Dr.  Muhammed Hussein Al Yassin, The Book of Opposites by Yaqoub bin Al-Sakit (244 AH), published and investigated by Dr. August Hefner, and The Book of Opposites by Sahl bin Muhammad Al-Sijistani (d. 255 AH), published and investigated by Dr.  August Hefner.

 

 

The thesis concluded identifying the meanings of the antonyms based on the connotations carried by their linguistic structure through the semantic analysis, so it dealt with the phonetic significance of some of the Quranic and poetic references contained by analyzing the significance of some of their sounds that appeared in the words.
