The Department of Translation at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah organized a panel discussion for postgraduate students entitled (Exploring Strategies for Translating Nominal Expressions Derived in the Translated Version of the Novel The American Granddaughter: From the Point of View of Skopos Theory).
The panel discussion presented by the student Ghaith Thaer Abdel Hakim and supervised by (Dr. Jawad Al-Maarij and Dr. Fatima Aziz) aims to explore the translation strategies used in converting nominal expressions (Nominalizations) from Arabic into English for more than 500 expressions in the translated version of the novel by the Iraqi writer Anam Kchache (American Granddaughter).
The panel discussion included highlighting the chapters that have been completed as one of the requirements for postgraduate students to stand on the last stages of research writing after scrutiny and careful review by the research supervisors, where all notes were taken into account according to the requirements of writing the thesis, and the theoretical part of this study was completed as it includes all sections required to achieve the purpose of the study. They are the introduction (explains the definition of noun expressions from a different linguistic perspective), the objectives of the study (includes the questions of the study), the problems of the study (includes three problems facing the study), the scope and limitations of the study (including what is the purpose of the study, the source of data and the model used in the study) ,the importance of the study (because of the benefit it will present in the translation department), the research steps include: The theoretical part and the practical part), the organization of the study (includes the arrangement of the five chapters according to the methods of writing the research). Previous studies include: presenting all previous studies, dated in an orderly manner) and concepts related to the expressions of nomenclature, as it is an introduction to the nomenclature, the nomenclature as a grammatical metaphor, the nomenclature in Arabic ,the nomenclature in the English language, the nomenclature and abstraction, the problems of the nomenclature, and the challenges of the nominal.
Research methodology: It includes an introduction to the chapter, as the model is a representation of the "reality" of the subject or field of our research (Saldanha and O'Brie.2018). Through the research process, it was found that the Skopos theory is the model that most closely matches the purpose of analyzing the study's information, because the study basically focuses on knowing the strategies used in translating the functional meaning of expressions. Also, translation strategies for nominal expressions are presented, as the source of data collection (the American novel Catchie Granddaughter), and data analysis (where the data is analyzed by applying theoretical rules).
