Discussion of Student Abdullah Najm Abdullah’s Thesis

A master’s thesis entitled (Exploring the role of translation in deforming the image of the city: public signs of bilingualism in Iraq as a case study) was discussed in the Department of Translation at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.

The thesis presented by researcher Abdullah Najm Abdullah included five chapters (introduction to the thesis, theoretical background of the thesis, methodology of the thesis, analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, conclusions and recommendations).

The thesis aims to identify the role of public signs with incorrect translation in deforming the city’s image and raising the level of visual pollution in Iraqi cities.

The thesis concluded that incorrect translation in public signs contributes greatly to deforming the image of Iraqi cities and thus raising the level of visual pollution. 

The researcher recommended the necessity of employing professional translators in the relevant institutions in order to translate public signs in the required manner.
