Basrah University Holds Symposium on Domestic Violence

The Educational and Psychological Guidance Unit at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah held a scientific awareness symposium on (Domestic violence in light of the new changes and their effects in society).

The symposium, which was moderated by Dr. Sarah Abdel-Razzaq Zaji Al-Asadi, and lectured by Dr. Hanaa Sadiq Karim and Dr. Wafa Yassin, presented the phenomenon of domestic violence and the extent of its danger to the family and society by presenting the forms of violence, including physical, psychological, verbal, and sexual.

The symposium touched on the causes of violence, which include weak religious faith and the biological factor inherent in inherited genes, as well as instinctive tendencies in which aggression is an element. Other basic reasons include poverty, unemployment, lack of agreement between husband and wife, and inequality between women and men.

The symposium concluded that to address this type of violence that occurs within the family, the draft law against domestic violence in Iraq must be activated, criminalizing cases of violence, enacting new constitutional laws, and tightening the penalty with imprisonment and imposing high financial fines in order to reduce this phenomenon.
