A Master Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines Cultural References in the Poetry of Ibn Nabatah al-Saadi

A master thesis in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah examined the cultural references in the poetry of Ibn Nabata al-Saadi.

The thesis presented by researcher Hussein Abdul-Ridha Muhan included three chapters (religious references in the poetry of Ibn Nabata al-Saadi (the Holy Quran, the Prophetic Hadith, and the sayings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them)) and historical references in his poetry and his return to Islamic incidents and battles, the days of the Arabs and historical figures, and literary and cognitive references in the poetry of Ibn Nabata al-Saadi).

The thesis aims to clarify the cultural references that the poet relied on in his collection of poems, and the study concluded that the poet relied on and referred to his religious, historical and literary heritage.

The study recommended shedding light on the religious, historical and literary heritage, as it constitutes a rich source from which poets draw. It also recommended studying and investigating the poet’s collection of poems, as it has only been studied and investigated once since 1974.
