A PhD thesis at the Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah discussed (Political and military developments in Afghanistan 1989-1996)
The thesis presented by researcher Shahid Abdul Redha Abd Ali included four chapters (Political developments in Afghanistan, the emergence of the resistance movement, the conflict between the Najibullah government and the Islamic resistance (1989-1992), the civil war August 1992 - November 1994 and the Taliban movement and its role in eliminating the Afghan parties and factions November 1994 until September 1996.
The thesis aims to identify the most important political and military events and developments within Afghanistan during this period, analyze the factors of conflict between the parties of the conflict, highlight the role of neighboring countries, regional powers and major powers, and explain the most important effects of the conflict on the unity of Afghanistan.
The thesis concluded that the conflict in Afghanistan is ethnic in addition to the conflict on power, and the interventions of neighboring countries increased its intensity, in addition to that, the Afghan parties that seized power after Najibullah failed to bring peace and stability to the country. The most important reasons for this were the disagreement among them and their incompetence in managing the country, which made the war continue, which burdened them and bent their stature.
