


Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Majid Abdul Hamid Al-Kaabi, and the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Dr. Haider Abdul Redha Al-Tamimi, and the Head of the Translation Department, Professor Zainab Sami Hawal, the Translation Department at the College of Arts / University of Basra, in cooperation with the Cancer Treatment Center / Al-Sadr Teaching Hospital, and the Nuclear Medicine Center / Specialized Children's Hospital, held an extensive scientific awareness seminar on cancerous tumors entitled (Cancerous Tumors: Early Diagnosis and Treatments) on Wednesday, 3/12/2025, in Al-Jahiz Hall in the department.
The seminar was divided into two sessions. The first session featured a presentation by Mr. Ahmed Qasim Al-Shahmani from the Cancer Treatment Center at Al-Sadr Teaching Hospital. He discussed the nature of cancer, or malignant disease, in general, then addressed cancerous tumors, their early symptoms, grades, stages, methods of diagnosis, the most dangerous and deadly types, and the available treatments. He also discussed the most prominent environmental and behavioral factors that contribute to the high rates of this disease, such as smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, continuous exposure to pollutants and radiation resulting from wars, and genetic factors.In the second part of the presentation, Ms. Hala Sami Saeed from the Nuclear Medicine Center at the Specialized Children's Hospital discussed breast cancer, which is the most common type of cancer among women, followed by uterine cancer and then other types. She explained that early detection of this type in its initial stages can achieve a cure rate of up to 90%. She also pointed out that other factors that eliminate or at least reduce this type of cancer include community awareness, encouraging women to perform monthly self-examinations, adhering to regular mammograms, and providing a suitable, healthy environment free from pollutants.
