The Translation Department at the College of Arts holds the Third Seminar for Postgraduate students

 

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Majid Abdul Hamid Al-Kaabi, and the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Dr. Haider Abdul Redha Al-Tamimi, and the Head of the Translation Department, Professor Zainab Sami Hawal, the Translation Department at the College of Arts / University of Basra held the third discussion seminar for postgraduate students within the program of discussion seminars for these studies for the current year, on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in one of the department’s halls.The session was for Master's student Khawla Taher Mohammed about her thesis entitled (A Contrastive Analysis of Student Translators' Improvised and Prepared: Simultaneous Interpreting in Political Discourse) supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Salam Abdul Majeed Saif Al-Din.

 

The student addressed the content of her thesis, which is the use of the qualitative-quantitative approach to measure aspects of accuracy, deletion and addition, substitution, and to evaluate fluency according to Daniel Gile's Effort Model to analyze the mental efforts exerted during the translation process.

 

 

The student concluded the session with a set of findings demonstrating that impromptu interpreting is characterized by a high cognitive load, leading to errors in comprehension, inaccuracy, and inconsistent performance, while prepared interpreting is characterized by greater accuracy, fluency, and balance. She also emphasized the importance of practical training and prior preparation to improve the competence of student interpreters.
