An Instructor from the College of Arts Participates in a Scientific Seminar on the Historical Roles of Basra

Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Al-Mutairi, a lecturer in the Department of History at the College of Arts / University of Basra, participated in a scientific seminar entitled “Basra during its historical phases”, which was held by the College of Education for Girls at the University of Basra.

In his lecture, Dr. Al-Mutairi discussed the historical role of the city of Basra and its names from ancient times until the advent of Islam. He reviewed the most prominent names by which the city was known throughout the different historical stages, noting that it was known in the early ages as “Turidon”, and in the Assyrian era there were references to it as “Bab Salmiti”, and then it later came under Seleucid control, where the city of “Charax” was founded, which had a prominent commercial role in the Arabian Gulf region.

The lecturer emphasized the importance of studying history in understanding the present and strengthening the cultural identity of Basra, given its significant historical and cultural standing.
