A PhD thesis in the Department of English Language at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah, entitled (Representations and Distortions of the Iraqi Environment in Local and International Media: A Study in Environmental Linguistics), examined this topic.
The thesis presented by student Abbas Mohsen Saleh Al-Maliki addressed a study that is the first of its kind in Iraq and the Middle East within the field of ecolinguistics, as it dealt with how Iraqi environmental issues, especially the marshes, are represented and distorted in local and international media and environmental documentaries.
The study concluded that environmental meaning in English-language media about Iraq is produced through interconnected linguistic and visual structures, rather than through isolated rhetorical features.
