The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, organized a scientific seminar entitled: “Theoretical and Applied Trends in Geographical Research,” with the participation of several faculty members from the department.
The seminar included lectures and scientific papers. Professor Dr. Basim Abdul Aziz Al-Othman presented his research paper entitled: “Geographical Research and Its Quantitative and Technical Applications between Confusion, Excessiveness, and Moderation.” Assistant Professor Dr. Osama Ismail, Lecturer Dr. Sabah Sqban Saadoun, and Lecturer Dr. Ahmed Ghazi Muftin also presented their research paper entitled: “The Impact of Climatic Factors on the Urban Pattern of Residential Units.”
Assistant Professor Huda Khalid Shaaban and Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Sami Abdul Aziz participated with their research paper: “Theoretical Frameworks and Regionalization in the Geography of Dialects,” while Assistant Professor Dr. Nadia Nouri Ali and Lecturer Dr. Ru’a Abdul Karim Shaker presented their paper entitled: “Soil Geography between Objective and Qualitative Analysis and Research Applications for Postgraduate Students at the University of Basrah.”
Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Khudr Salman and Assistant Lecturer Saddam Hussein Barak also presented a paper entitled: “Informal Housing and Its Social and Environmental Impacts in the City of Abi Al-Khaseeb,” while Assistant Professor Dr. Salem Jasim Salman delivered his paper entitled: “Spatial Analysis of Psychological Scale among Some Secondary School Students in Basrah Governorate – A Study in Social Geography.”
Assistant Professor Dr. Ibtihal Shaker Majeed and Lecturer Iman Taha Abdul Hassan participated with a paper entitled: “Informal Housing in Basrah Governorate and Its Environmental and Health Effects.” Lecturer Dr. Haider Ali Jabr and Iman Jabbar Salih also presented their paper entitled: “Theoretical and Applied Trends in Population Research.”
Lecturer Dr. Shurooq Talib Abdul Wahab presented her paper entitled: “Stages of the Development of Electrical Energy in Basrah Governorate for the Production, Transmission, and Distribution Sectors for the Period 2010–2025,” while Assistant Lecturer Shaimaa Sami Abdul Hafidh delivered her research entitled: “Modern Applied Trends in Climatic Studies.” Assistant Lecturer Hiba Abbas Karim also presented her paper entitled: “Political Geography between Tradition and Modernity: A Study in Research Trends.”
The seminar addressed theoretical and applied trends that constitute the foundation for understanding and analyzing natural and human phenomena in geographical research in a scientific and methodological manner. Theoretical trends refer to the intellectual frameworks and concepts upon which geographers rely in interpreting various phenomena, whereas applied trends represent the practical aspect in which these concepts are employed to address real-world problems, as reflected in the participants’ research papers across various human and physical geography specializations.
