PhD Thesis at Basrah University Examined Preference through Analogy (al-taʾrjīḥ bi-l-qiyās) among Grammarians and Morphologists

A PhD thesis submitted to the Department of Arabic Language in the College of Arts at the University of Basrah, entitled “Preference through Analogy among Grammarians and Morphologists – A Descriptive Study,” explored the role of analogy in prioritizing and directing grammatical and morphological opinions.

The thesis, presented by the student Akab Saqr Abdullah, aimed to clarify the concept of analogy (qiyās) among scholars, outline its standards, and explain its role in constructing grammatical and morphological rulings as well as in selecting between different linguistic forms.

The study addressed a number of grammatical, morphological, and phonetic issues in which scholars relied on analogy to favor certain views, while also explaining the foundations of such preference and its impact on Arabic linguistic studies.
