The Law of Opposites

Dr. Khalid Na'eem Shnawah issued a book titled "The Law of Opposites" which includes "the opposites in the dictionary known as (FiqH Al-Adhdaad) (Law of Opposites)" by Majdul-Deen Mohammad bin Ya'qoob known as Fairuzabadi . It contains the items that give two opposite meanings. Its data were taken from books on linguistics and Al-Qamus al-Muhit (The Encompassing Dictionary) which is regarded as the most famous one in Arabic due to its enormous linguistic material and easiness of access. Its items were arranged in terms of rhyme taking into account the internal structure.

The book, Fiqh Al-Adhdaad, which we investigate and publish, is a unique dictionary and an effort which is complimentary to Al-Qamus al-Muhit. In this dictionary it was intended to compile opposites following the same way of arranging its linguistic material. We have said "it is a unique dictionary because its compiler encapsulates what was rejected by some linguists and makes it a linguistic glossary that can be referred to. One of the reasons behind its compilation is the presence of opposites in Al-Qamus al-Muhit as narrated by the Arabs, the Quran and the prophet speeches such as doubt vs. certainty, behind vs. front, hope vs. fear. Such items as indicated by the Arabs are opposites.
